DRAWN JACKET

All my work started with the drawing of this jacket.

For a while I only dreamt of having this jacket in my closet. In 2012 I finally decided to go for it and make this jacket for real.

With a makerspace nearby I had the opportunity to explore several ways of cutting fabric. I ended up using a Laser Plotter to make some try-outs and decided lasercutting was the only way to make this happen.

Next was making the actual patterns. The drawing as you can see on the left was the inspiration, but cutting this out you are still left with a two dimensional image. I needed to make a drawing that would work in three dimensions not in two.

Just like when you start drafting clothing patterns, I got these huge papers and started sketching with pens and markers.

With a drawing on paper that I liked I stumbled upon my next big problem: I needed this drawing as a digital file. This meant cutting the drawing in pieces I could scan, after which I had to puzzle them back together digitally.

3 months of altering lines to make them match the original drawing later… I could finally cut my first prototype.

In 2012 I applied to show my first fabric prototypes in an exhibition called ‘Fashion Clash’ in the Netherlands.
In 2013 I sold my first jackets and in 2014 I was invited to show my work to press and buyers in Milan at WHITE tradeshow and PREMIER VISION in Paris.
In 2016 the jacket was displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as part of the ‘#Techstyle’ exhibition.

The jacket today is not exactly the same as the jacket in 2012. I am trying to make every jacket a bit better then the last one, overtime hopefully evolving the design into the best version of itself.
